AB-196 - Gender Identity & Expression protections for Employment & Housing
California
Governor Gray Davis signed
AB-196 into law on Saturday. (It goes into effect in January). Shepherded by
Assemblyman Mark Leno, AB-196 clarifies the language of the State Fair Employment and Housing Code to include protection against discrimination based on percieved gender identity and expression.
A large group of TGs were out partying this weekend, in honor of the first
Northern California chapter meeting of the Southern Belles Society. Perhaps we should be glad we did not know about AB-196 until Sunday, or we would have set a hell raising record!
They had a press conference at the GLBT Community Center across the street this morning, and the Honorable Mark was able to introduce the team that made this happen. Mark Leno was double-proud, as it was his first "bill that became law" in his new seat. Count Jamie among his many admirers!
Everyone was careful to praise Governor Gray Davis, who showed real courage in signing this bill Saturday in the midst of a personal political firestorm from the Right. Yeah Gray!
So ladies & gentleman, we do have something to celebrate!
